To improve the ability of engineers to use dynamic models as part of the design process, a model synthesis procedure for developing proper models of hybrid systems is presented. An accuracy criterion and a new search pattern is developed for a model order deduction algorithm (MODA) previously published. The extended MODA process consists of systematically incrementing the rank of each component in the system model until a set of critical system eigenvalues has been defined. Then, the rank of component models is incremented until each critical system eigenvalue has converged to within a specified tolerance. In addition, a formulation taken from the component mode synthesis literature is introduced to allow components of the system to be represented in modal or finite segment form. A simple example is provided to show how extended MODA can facilitate the synthesis of proper system models for design.
